PowerZip 5.01: Advanced Data Compression Features Made Easier

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia -- Wednesday, September 29, 1999 -- Trident Software (http://www.trident-software.com) announces the release of the new Version 5.0 of PowerZip, a user-friendly compression utility that makes maintaining, backing up and distributing archives easy and efficient. Trident Software's Y2K-compliant PowerZip software for Windows has the ability to compress files considerably, thus enabling both home users and businesses to store an unlimited amount of archives or records and distribute as many of them as needed--either on floppy or zip disks or via the Internet.

Numerous Features

Complex directory structures and large archives are becoming increasingly common, and users are having a greater need for a program that enables them to manage and distribute their data with ease," explains Dimitri Ternovski, Project Manager at Trident Software. "This is where PowerZip comes in. Other compression utility programs are available, but none of them have PowerZip's easy-to-use interface or offer as wide a variety of features. With PowerZip 5.0, users can enjoy robust performance along with such features as greater customizability, improved shell extensions, support for over 12 types of archives, drag and drop support, a flexible self-extractor, folder view, multi-disk spanning, encryption and decryption support and the ability to add folders to archives without using wildcards--although wildcards are still supported."

Options For Distribution

Businesses that need to distribute large files--either as e-mail attachments, through the Internet or on disks--have found PowerZip to be a valuable tool. Ternovski notes: "Compressing files using PowerZip can dramatically reduce their size, which is a major consideration for businesses. When large files that haven't been compressed are distributed via The Internet, they can put a lot of stress on a business' server and take a lot of time to download. But when PowerZip has compressed those files, the download size can be reduced considerably. Meanwhile, businesses that choose to distribute data on floppy disks or zip disks will find PowerZip valuable because compressing the data will reduce the number of disks needed and therefore, cut production costs."

Options For Storage

Even if a business doesn't need to distribute data but only needs to store it, PowerZip can cut costs greatly. "When PowerZip compresses a business' data," Ternovski says, "it takes up less room on floppy or zip disks. Thus, the business is spending less money buying disks, and if it needs to mail that data, it is spending less on postage. Further, PowerZip makes it easier for a business to create and store multiple copies of its records."

History

Trident Software was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1997, when Version 1.0 of PowerZip was released. Since then, Trident Software has maintained a loyal customer base in 25 countries, including the U.S., Germany and Australia, and has carefully listened to its customers demands when developing new versions of the software. PowerZip 4.51 was given a 5-star rating and was named Editor's Pick by ZDNet's web site http://www.hotfiles.com.

Requirements

PowerZip 5.0 is compatible with Windows 95 and 98 and Windows NT 4.0 SP3. It will also be compatible with Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 2000 operating system. Trident Software recommends at least 5 MB of disk space, 8 MB of RAM and 66 MHz CPU, although 10 MB of disk space, 16 MB of RAM and 150 MHz CPU would be preferable. Trident Software has no immediate plans to develop a Macintosh version of PowerZip, but it is considering a Java version that should be able to run on a Mac. PowerZip, which supports such compression formats as CAB, ZIP, GZ, RAR, Z, ARJ, TAR and LZH, can be downloaded free of charge by visiting http://www.trident-software.com. After the user has had a chance to try out the software, he/she can purchase however many copies are needed. Prices range from one copy for $20 and 2-9 copies at $17 per copy to 100-199 copies at $4 per copy, 200-499 copies at $3 per copy or 500 or more copies at $2 per copy. Those who already have PowerZip 4.5x will be given a free upgrade to V. 5.0.
