PowerZip 5.2 - A Fresh Approach to Zip Files

Melbourne, Australia--April 25, 2000--Trident Software Pty Ltd pleased to announce the release of a new version of PowerZip - v5.2. PowerZip is a compression utility for Windows (32-bit), which steps away from the WinZip paradigm (copied in so many other programs) to bring its users an intuitive and easy to use interface without jeopardizing the convenience and features.

It's Easy To Use

What sets PowerZip 5.2 apart from many other compression utilities on the market today is, among other things, its easy to use user interface. While some Zip utilities provide access to the basic features (such as compressing or extracting files) through dialog boxes so crowded with controls that even the more experienced users can find them puzzling, PowerZip 5.2 attempts to hide the complexities of archives behind the simple and stylish Compression and Extraction Wizards.

Context-sensitive help is available in the Wizards and throughout the whole program to explain the features. Also included in the Help is a tutorial which can help novice users get started with PowerZip and which also explains the concepts related to Zip files.

The Welcome screen shown at start-up (which can be turned off) provides tips on how to work with PowerZip more efficiently and describes the most commonly used features to aid new users.

Large archives with complicated folder hierarchies are becoming increasingly commonplace. By displaying such archives in a way similar to how Windows Explorer (My Computer) displays folders, PowerZip's Folder View makes working with such large archives a little bit more straight forward. The Folder View can be turned off if not needed.

It's Convenient To Use

Although many compression programs offer wizards to simplify usage, this ease of use often comes at a cost of convenience. Having to go through ten screens just to zip a file might seem acceptable for a first-time user, however, as he/she gains experience, the wizards can become a nuisance long before the user learns of all of the available options. PowerZip attempts to avoid that - its Compression and Extraction Wizards are very brief and the number of screens is kept to a minimum. In fact, our tests show that the number of clicks required to accomplish most commonly used tasks through PowerZip's wizards is comparable, and in some cases less, than that of programs which do not offer wizards.

PowerZip contains many time-saving features designed to make it as convenient to use as possible. PowerZip has full drag and drop support and is integrated with Windows Explorer (My Computer) allowing users to compress and extract files with as few as one or two clicks. This integration also allows multiple archives to be unzipped with as little as three clicks for each group of archives.

It's Feature-Rich

PowerZip attempts to deliver an impressive feature set. It has built-in support for Zip, Cab, Rar, Ace, Tar, Gz, Z, Jar archives while Arj, Ha and Lzh archives are supported via external programs. PowerZip offers even the more advanced archive options such as multi-disk spanning, comments, encryption, storing and restoring of directory structures and wildcard support. It includes a very flexible self-extractor (with features such as variables, command execution and start-up message) which makes it easy to distribute archives to users who might not have a compression utility.

PowerZip's appearance and behavior can be customized to suit individual tastes and usage habits.
