Painless ZIP File Management with PowerZip

Trident Software has released PowerZip 6.0, a Windows application that takes the mystery out of ZIP archives for beginners, and allows experienced ZIP file users to speed their way through even the most complex archiving tasks.

ZIP file managers allow you to combine one or more files into a compressed archive, and save time and money when sending files across the Internet, or backing up files onto floppy disks and other removable media. PowerZip's compression and extraction wizards make working with ZIP files easy. PowerZip adds itself to Windows Explorer's context (right-click) menu, and even the most complex ZIP functions are available with just a couple of clicks.

Drag and drop functions are fully supported. You can quickly extract files by dragging them from the PowerZip window and dropping them onto any folder. You can compress files or folders by dropping them into the PowerZip window. Different passwords may be assigned to individual files within a ZIP archive, or the same password can be used for all files. PowerZip lets you view files in an archive, without having to extract them first.

If you're sending a ZIP archive to somebody who may not own a ZIP file manager, or to somebody who might be uncomfortable using one, you can create self-extracting archives that can be opened without any external program. There are even self-extracting archive features that make it convenient to use PowerZip as a program installer, including the ability to customize messages and labels, to specify folders, and determine if folders and files should be overwritten.

While ZIP has emerged as the compression format used by the majority of PC users, there are a number of other competing formats. PowerZip lets you extract data from eleven of the most popular formats (ZIP, ARJ, RAR, ACE, CAB, JAR, LZH, HA, TAR, GZ, and Z), including several that are commonly found on UNIX-based computers.

New features in version 6.0 include enhanced wizards, an improved user interface, a user-friendly Welcome dialog for beginners, better integration with Windows Explorer, and support for macros.

PowerZip's macros make it easy to automate common tasks such as backing up or restoring the same group of files and folders. You record your zipping macros by using PowerZip's compression wizard, and your unzipping macros by using the extraction wizard. You can play back your macros with a simple double-click.

Beginning users will appreciate the Quick Start Tutorial, the intuitive interfaces, and the context-sensitive help files that are available at every step of the compression and extraction process. Power users will appreciate the ability to fully customize the toolbar, menu bar, and wizards, and advanced features such as ZIP comments, encryption and decryption, multi-disk spanning, managing path information, support for relative paths, and the availability of macro creation for often-used archiving tasks such as making regular file backups.
